The Art of a Handmade Life: Gardening, Baking & Soap Making

Bittersweet has been sharing a collection of Spring Inspiration recipes on our social media sites. Most are easy to prepare and unique. Let me know if you make any of them. I'd love to hear what you think. We love this one! I made a loaf of sourdough yesterday and spread a slice with this yummy treat.

The garden starts calling my name before the sun is fully up, bread dough rises quietly on the counter, herbs begin stretching toward the light, and the soap studio slowly fills with fresh new ideas for the season ahead.

This time of year always feels like renewal to me.

Most mornings begin early. Coffee in hand, I walk through the garden checking on seedlings, herbs, and whatever decided to bloom overnight. Gardening has a way of reminding us to slow down and pay attention. Tiny seeds eventually become armfuls of flowers, bowls of greens, and baskets filled with inspiration. I’ve always believed that the smallest things often become the biggest blessings.

After the garden comes the kitchen.

I’ve been baking homemade bread again, something about kneading dough and waiting for it to rise feels grounding in a world that moves too fast. Baking and soap-making actually have a lot in common. Both require patience, intuition, and simple ingredients thoughtfully blended together. Neither can be rushed. Both fill a home with comfort.

Then it’s back into the studio.

Soap loaves are being poured, skincare is being made fresh each week, and new ideas are constantly covering my worktables. One thing I’m especially excited about this season is the arrival of our new Soap Sponges.

These are going to be appealing to many. The idea of not having a bar or pump, but a sponge filled with your favorite soap, is a wonderful concept. At least we think so.

Imagine a soft, natural sponge already loaded with rich Bittersweet Soap. Just add water, and it transforms into a creamy, luxurious lather that gently cleanses and exfoliates. They’re simple, useful, and beautifully handmade — exactly the kind of product I love creating.

I think people are craving handmade things again. Real things. Slower things. Products made with intention instead of mass production.

That’s always been the heart behind Bittersweet.

Nearly thirty years ago, I left a secure job to make soap by hand, long before social media and online shops existed. Back then, I had no idea where the journey would lead. I simply knew I wanted to create clean skincare that people could feel good about using. Over the years, Bittersweet has grown into something far bigger than I ever imagined, but the heart behind it remains exactly the same.

Simple ingredients. Handmade goods. Meaningful living.

So as Spring unfolds, I’ll continue planting seeds, baking bread, pouring soap, and dreaming up beautiful new things for the shop.

Thank you for being here and for supporting handmade in a world that often forgets the beauty of it.

 Warmly,
Jill McDowell
